Art and Love from Me to You

Shining

Last week I received a compliment from a woman who I deeply admire and consider a brilliant creative light in the world.  My eyes filled with water at her words.  She said that its like I am holding a magic wand and spreading brightness with my art and she waved her arm like an angel sprinkling fairy dust.

When people say things like that to me, I am initially shocked- you think that, really?  But over time, this initial shock has turned into a deep gratitude.

Its not that I think I am special.  It’s actually not me.  I mean, it is me, but it is more about me being open to the wisdom in the universe that is available to everyone- the wisdom and creativity that swirls around us, that connects all of us.

I finished my gratitude project called A Hundred Thank Yous, where I made 100 paintings for 100 people who have made a difference in my life.  I had a gallery show on June 16th, and now I am in the process of giving them all away.

A few weekends ago it hit me how really crazy this whole thing was.  100 paintings?  How did I even do that?  But after I let the  feelings wash over me and away, I saw with clear eyes, the gifts in all of it.

When I first started the project, I worried that I would run out of creative ideas.  But it is not me who has to think of every painstakingly creative idea.  I just have to show up and be open to it.   The creative ideas are out there in the universe.  The painting is already made.

I show up to my work openhearted, with the intention to radiate love and shine brightly.

That’s really all I need to do.

Lori everytime I see anything about your project I literally get teary! The enormity of it I totally get, being in the middle of my own 52 Canvases. But your willingness to give and not receive in the monetary way is what makes your art more amazing and your heart fmore full with gratitude! It’s probably what allowed the ideas to flow freely. Having to not worry about an end reciever, but rather painting for someone who has touched you opened your heart up to the amazing possibilities within. And I bet ya every person who received will be ever grateful and changed in some way. You are a role model to us all on the creative path. Best to you!

Oh Jenni what you wrote is so sweet to hear. Thank you. I love that our projects are similar. It’s funny because I didn’t worry about the end receiver at all – until all of the paintings were hung on the wall for the show and then I was panicked! All I could think of was what if people didn’t like their paintings, who do I think I am, etc…

how awesome is that, that you’ve been able to take in a wonderful compliment and be deeply grateful for it…that is definitely not easy to do…receive!!! i think the compliment is very true tho…your art is very uplifting….i think it’s a combination of colors and images that make such a delicious stew!

Do you ever listen to On Being with Krista Tippet (on NPR). She just interviewed Roseann Cash – who talked similarly about how all the songs are out there and she just has to be the one to find it. (http://www.onbeing.org/program/rosanne-cash-time-traveler/1048) Love this concept…and being open to the universe! Beautiful Lori! Thanks for sharing.

What my husband and I are both amazed with is the fact that you had 100 people in your life that you are thankful for! Truly amazing that you are surrounded by a community of people that have filled you with such joy!

Lynnette thank you 🙂 I didn’t know all of the people I made paintings for- many were for authors and people that I am grateful for that I never met. I made paintings for people that I don’t know well but something about our connection made a difference to me. My community is not that big! hahaha xoxo
